The founders Günther Hauer and Johann Gansterer embody the values that drive FEEL WOOD like no other. In an interview they give us an insight into their work, their vision and their passion for wood.
Günther and Johann, how did you come up with the idea for SLOW WOOD and what makes your work so special?
Günther: The idea for SLOW WOOD came from a desire to return to the origins of craftsmanship. Wood is a natural material that deserves to be treated with care and respect. For us, the focus is not on maximising profit, but on the correct treatment of the material.
Johann: Exactly. We want the furniture we create to add real value for our customers – not just functionally, but also emotionally. We want our furniture to tell stories and provide pleasure for a lifetime, if not several generations.
That sounds impressive. Why do FEEL WOOD solid wood planks fit in so well with your philosophy?
Günther: With FEEL WOOD solid wood flooring we have found a product that reflects our values: timeless, authentic and high quality. The materials are solid, durable and bring out the natural beauty of the wood – exactly what our customers are looking for and exactly what we want.
Johann: FEEL WOOD stands for sustainability and careful choice of materials, which fits perfectly with our approach. The floorboards we are now laying are not only beautiful to look at, but also promote a healthy indoor climate. We work with wood whose positive properties remain unchanged – no glue, no varnish, just pure wood.
You talk a lot about sustainability. How do you put it into practice in your work?
Johann: We specifically select individual trees and use ‘moon wood’ – wood that is harvested at the optimum time. This ensures optimum quality and a piece of unadulterated nature for your living space.
Günther: Drying is done by the sun and wind, we use only natural products. Wood is a natural product and we want to keep it that way. Sustainability is not an empty phrase, but an integral part of our work.
You also offer workshops. What are they about and what can people learn from them?
Günther: Our workshops are for anyone who wants to learn more about working with wood, whether you are a beginner or an advanced woodworker. We will show you how to work with wood and how to use tools correctly. Our aim is to pass on our knowledge and love of wood.
Johann: Young people in particular discover what it is like to create something with their own hands. We also teach the importance of environmental sustainability and the conscious use of resources.
